How to hold a fire extinguisher

Knowing how to properly hold an extinguisher is essential for its safe and effective use in the event of a fire. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you handle an extinguisher properly.
Preparing the extinguisher
Check the fire extinguisher
First of all, make sure the extinguisher is in good working order:
- Pressure: Check the pressure gauge to make sure the pressure is within the green zone (for permanent pressure extinguishers).
- Label: Confirm that the extinguisher is suitable for the type of fire (class of fire) you need to extinguish.
Handling and Safety Position
Gripping the extinguisher correctly
- Handle: Use the handle on top to lift the extinguisher. This handle helps you carry the extinguisher easily to the fire zone, then place it on the ground.
Fire extinguisher activation
Remove Safety Pin
- Pin: Pull out the safety pin located near the handle. This pin prevents the extinguisher from being accidentally activated.
Pipe positioning
- Hose: If your extinguisher is equipped with a flexible hose, grasp the hose near its end for better control.
Attack distance and deployment technique
Keeping your distance
- Safety distance: Start about 2 to 3 metres from the fire. (0.5 to 1.5m for a CO2 extinguisher).
Aim and Deploy
- Aim: Aim the extinguisher nozzle or hose at the base of the fire. It's crucial to aim at the source of the fire, not the flames.
- Activate: Press firmly on the handle to release the extinguishing agent, or on the lance handle depending on the model.
Efficient use
Scan
- Sweeping: Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire, moving slowly if necessary. Continue until the fire is completely out.
Safety Tips
- Upright position: Hold the extinguisher in an upright position. Do not tilt to avoid obstruction of the extinguishing agent.
- Firm grip: Always keep a firm grip on the handle and body of the extinguisher to control the direction of the extinguishing agent.
- Stay calm: Panic can make it difficult to use the extinguisher. Take a deep breath and follow the steps methodically.
- CO2 extinguisher: hold the handle with one hand, but do not touch the body of the extinguisher: the CO2 emerges from the unit in the form of extremely cold dry ice, which can injure the user.
